Brown Professor Elaine Bearer
Mapping the Brain: In pursuit of the physical properties of thought in action

Thursday, April 10, 2008
6:30 pm Reception
7:00 pm Presentation with Q&A

The Palace Hotel, Pacific Heights Room
2 New Montgomery Street (near Market)
San Francisco

The biological behavior of neurons and glia in the brain are rapidly being discovered and explained. Yet this information has yet to reveal the biological basis of experience, such as consciousness, feelings, or the uniquely human appreciation of music. The brain is composed of an interacting distributed network of neurons that conduct electrical and chemical signals along anatomical pathways at both short and long range. These circuits are maintained by proteins that are synthesized in the neuronal cell body and trafficked to distant sites by an active biochemical process, termed axonal transport. In the Brain Sciences Program at Brown, researchers use herpes, the squid giant axon, peptide-conjugated nanobeads and magnetic resonance imaging to understand the molecular mechanisms and functional dynamics of these circuits in action. In this talk, Professor Bearer will present new work from her lab and from collaborators at Caltech that apply this dynamic imaging to the understanding of thought in action.

Elaine L. Bearer, MD-PhD, is a Professor at Brown University. Her primary tenure is in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and she is also tenured in Engineering and holds a courtesy adjunct appointment in the Music Department. Bearer came to Brown from UCSF where she had completed the combined MD-PhD in a record 6 years, a residency in Pathology and a post-doctoral fellowship with Bruce Alberts in Biochemistry and Biophysics. She is in San Francisco for a symposium at UCSF honoring Prof Alberts, who served for 12 years as the President of the National Academy of Sciences. Bearer has also been Moore Distinguished Scholar and Visiting Associate at Caltech, studied with Nadia Boulanger long ago in Paris and Fountainbleau, and has received many awards from NIH, NEA, Meet the Composer, the Moore Foundation, Dart Neurosciences LLP, NSF, and others. Her scientific publications are posted on Pubmed, her musical scores are available from Hildgard Publishing Co, CDs from Albany Records, and CDs and books from Amazon.
